Merrimack Police Department's K-9 team includes Officer Greg Walters and a German Shepard named Gunny. Dogs are used in law enforcement for many reasons, one of the most important being their sense of smell. They have more olfactory sensors than humans, helping them detect explosives and drugs. New K-9 officers go through some initial training, but for there is some level of training that takes place every day. Additional formal training for tactical skills, the detection of specific substances and other education is also available.
